Business set up

Server: (6-12 hours installation time) It is a good idea to have a dedicated server to serve the rest of the clients in the office. Servers come in all different sizes, and have many different functions. Advantages to having a dedicated server are:

  • Centralized administration - This means it is easier to maintain user accounts, passwords, permissions, security, etc.. from one point of contact, rather than having to go around to each computer to resolve an issue. In simple terms, we can address issues FASTER.)
  • Tougher Hardware (Server hardware is built to withstand more of a beating from everyday wear and tear as opposed to a standard PC.)
  • File and Print Sharing, (Servers have built in software that workstations do not have. This allows them to share software and printers more efficiently.)
  • Security - Server operating systems are more secure than workstation operating systems.

Workstation: (2-4 hours installation time) Most of the new Workstations we use today are the Windows Pro platforms.  You can get away with using a Windows workstation for a server if needed, but it will not have all the benefits of a true Server platform. If you have more than 5 workstations in your office it is HIGHLY recommended to use a dedicated server.
